Septic Systems and How They Work
Choosing The Right System for Your Needs
Your system needs are based largely on the amount of wastewater you are likely to generate, this is determined by the design of your house, such as:
- Number of bedrooms or rooms that could be used as bedrooms
- Use of water saving features
Your effluent disposal area then needs to be able to disperse the treated wastewater without saturating the ground to the point where the water comes to the surface.
The cheapest systems to install and maintain are primary treatment systems, however secondary treatment systems are necessary when there are limitations on the effluent disposal area due to factors like:
- Amount of land available
- Dams, rivers, lakes or bores in the surrounding area
- Soil type and structure up to a metre below the surface
