E-Waste and Battery Recycling
If it's got a plug, battery or cord and is unwanted, it's e-waste. It could be any of a whole range of items from work, home or even the garden shed. From old phones, computers, batteries and household appliances to power tools and toys.
Electronic waste is growing up to three times faster than general municipal waste. The good news is that e-waste is more than 95 per cent recyclable. For example, old mobile phones can be recycled to make stainless steel goods, new batteries and even plastic fence posts.
E-waste, and batteries in particular, if not appropriately recycled, pose a significant risk if put in household bins. Batteries disposed of through your household bins can cause waste collection vehicle fires and landfill fires.
South Gippsland residents can drop off e-waste, including batteries, for recycling at any of Council's six Waste Transfer Stations. Fees apply to some specific items to cover the cost of recycling and transport. Other items such as anything predominantly metal, is able to be dropped off free of charge (de-gassing fee may apply for fridges, freezers and air conditioning units). E-waste dropped off for recycling at a Waste Transfer Station is sent to a licenced e-waste recycler.
